What are Arbours and Bowers?
An Arbour (Arbor) is normally an entrance to a space in the yard or garden that is used to designate the entrance that normally features trelliswork and trained vines. They likely had a dual purpose in the past, allowing flowering vines and climbing vegetables a sturdy perch to support itself.
A Bower can be described as a shady oasis in a space to offer a cool spot to rest within a garden. Some are entirely made of plant materials, and others are trained up vines or wood slats. The crucial parts of a bower is the natural shade aspect–its always plants supplying the shade. The structural support can be wire or wood, but it should be simple construction, curved or straight.
Vertical Garden Structures- What are they called?
Some garden structures defy general descriptions. As we designed structures, we choose a name that describes it well, but, these names or descriptors are not generally known. Here’s some examples.
A Garden Arch, Elliptical Arbor or Hemispherical Arbour
This garden arch is part of a deck design for one of our repeat clients in Caledon Ontario. Its just another garden structure that she trained roses to grow over. Its about 12 years old in the photo. This elliptical arbor is made of kiln dried western red cedar lumber.
A Rose Trellis, Rose Pillar or Rose Column
Roses need full sun to thrive. They can grow 10′ – 20′ if the right conditions are present. This rose column was built about 9′ tall of red cedar lumber. It is 3 sided to enable vines to travel through the lattice. 20′ of plant can be condensed into a rose pillar or trellis for a burst of blooms! This rose column is an ideal choice for the garden lovers who appreciate vertical growing space for the garden. Creating trelliswork for the garden can enhance your landscape and provide support for climbing plants.
Trelliswork Trelliage or Trompe Loeil
Trelliswork was traditionally a French thing. Trelliage that fit with the architecture to train vines and plants up.
This small trelliswork screen hides an air conditioner at a residence in Barrie. The wings are hinged to allow for service, and the center screen pops out also to allow servicing the units. It has an aluminum cap for longevity and it was made of Western Red Cedar lumber.
A Destination Pergola or Corner Arbor
This Destination Pergola was commissioned by Canadian Home Workshop Magazine many years ago. It was photographed at the Toronto Fall Home Show when it was finished. I guarantee you have never heard of a destination pergola– The magazine made that up.
Its made of kiln dried western red cedar and features a floor structure so that they could show it off at events and load it on a truck with a forklift. The latticework up top is laminated red cedar and it has built in benches.
A destination pergola can serve as a beautiful focal point for the garden.
In the foreground you can see an early rose column (Plans Available) for training vines. It is a 4 sided structure you can build in a day.
Pagoda, Pavilion or Garden Roof
This pagoda was built by Matt Holinaty “Ironwood Decks” in Niagara falls. We helped him out with the design. He did a masterful job. It features cedar shingles, copper flashings and heat treated ash lumber.
We called it a pagoda due to the curved roof, but many may call it a pavilion or a garden roof.
Whether you call it a pagoda or a garden roof, it offers shelter and beauty for the garden. These structures are perfect for the garden enthusiasts looking to enhance their outdoor spaces for the garden.
