Why Wood Fences Actually Fail (And How to Build One That Doesn’t)

If you search for information on building a wood fence, you’ll find no shortage of advice — and most of it is recycled from lumber yard pamphlets going back decades. It rarely tells you why fences actually fail, because most of it was never written by anyone who had to go back and fix one.

We have. Here’s what we’ve learned from the field.

Missing vertical support. One of the most common failures we see is a fence built without adequate vertical bracing, with thin members like 2x2s nailed flat against 2x4s doing a job they were never sized for. It looks fine for a season or two. Then the boards start working loose.

Rails not tied to posts. We’ve inspected fences where someone added extra rails for strength but never actually fastened them to the posts — which does the opposite of what was intended. Extra weight without a structural connection just accelerates the failure it was meant to prevent.

Ignoring what grows around it. A small tree or shrub planted too close to a fence line looks harmless at installation. Give it a few years and the trunk will push a rail or a lattice panel clean out of alignment. Site planning isn’t just about the fence — it’s about everything that’ll be growing next to it in ten years.

Frost heave. In Ontario’s frost-prone soil, concrete curbs and footings lift a measurable amount every winter as ground moisture freezes and expands. Rails mounted too close to grade take the brunt of that movement season after season. This is a design consideration, not an afterthought — it has to be accounted for at the framing stage, especially on commercial properties where snow plowing and open-lot wind load add even more stress.

The fix starts below ground. None of this is complicated once you know to look for it. Proper vertical support sized to the actual wind and snow load, rails mechanically fastened to posts (not just to each other), enough clearance from anything that’ll grow into the structure, and framing that accounts for frost movement — that’s the difference between a fence that’s still standing in twenty years and one that’s leaning by year five.
