What Are ‘Deck Apples’? Why Comparable Decks Aren’t Always Comparable

Anyone who’s sat through a deck estimate has heard the phrase “comparing apples to apples” — and most people nod along without really grasping what it means for their project. A deck is a deck, right? Not quite.

Give a deck a third more foundation than it strictly needs, and it still looks like an ordinary deck from the top — it’s just one that could handle parking a car on it if you had to. Pre-dry and finish every component before installation, sealing all six sides of every board, and it still looks much like any other deck — it’s just far more expensive, because it takes considerably longer to build that way.

A deck designed specifically around the client’s needs, built with details refined over decades of field experience, is worth close to double what an ordinary deck costs — and for good reason. It ages more gracefully, lasts longer, and earns more genuine praise from the people who use it. It also simply takes longer to build, because none of those advantages come from shortcuts.

The lesson for anyone comparing quotes: two decks that look identical in a proposal can be built to completely different standards. The difference rarely shows up on day one — it shows up five, ten, fifteen years down the road.
