What Actually Happens to PVC Fencing Over Time

PVC (poly vinyl chloride) fencing has been on the market for decades now, and the failure pattern is consistent enough to be worth documenting. UV exposure causes fissure cracks in the material over time — it becomes progressively more translucent and brittle, and then fails suddenly and catastrophically rather than gracefully degrading.

PVC starts out strong and flexible when new, but that changes with age. Grass staining, scratches from weed trimmers, mud splash discoloration, and general pollution grime all show up more visibly on PVC than on other materials, and the cleaning solutions that address it (chemical sprays with a power wash rinse) are often needed annually to keep it looking presentable. If the underlying structure isn’t sufficiently braced, PVC fencing will also sag over time.

None of this makes PVC a bad choice outright — but it’s worth going in with realistic expectations about maintenance and long-term appearance rather than assuming “vinyl” automatically means “maintenance-free.”
