Why Fence Posts Rot in the Ground (And What Actually Stops It)
Rot needs three things to take hold: moisture, oxygen, and the natural sugars in the timber. That combination is worst right at the surface of the ground, which is exactly where posts see the most damage.
A common instinct is to set posts in a sonotube to isolate them from the soil — but without the post itself extending into the earth for leverage, fences and elevated decks lose lateral support and will lean over time unless you add extra bracing, which most people don’t want on a fence line. Concrete footings don’t solve this either — concrete actually retains moisture, which can accelerate rot rather than prevent it.
What actually works: sealing the post with an epoxy coating or exterior stain before installation, which can extend post life five to ten years beyond the typical ten-to-twenty-year lifespan. An even more durable option is a dedicated post-protection sleeve with a silicone-sealed upper edge — similar in concept to the membrane material used to prevent chemical infiltration beneath landfills. It’s a permanent solution rather than a maintenance item.
