Large 800 sq’ Deck in Aurora (Plans and Designs)
This original deck was built in Aurora, but it is suitable for any climate. This deck plan is roughly 800 square feet and designed to be built of Pressure Treated, Cedar or Hardwood. Tighten the joist spacing for Composites or PVC. It features a dining room pergola, broad deep steps, urn pedestals and a cool custom railing that looks beautiful. This design is robust enough to last 3 or 4 decades outside the rainforest!
These simple details are easy to adapt to most homes with large yards. The grand front entrance to the deck will put your best face forward towards your neighbors. Obstruct the view with large planters on the Urn Pedestals.
D181 Large Deck Plans –Designer’s Notes:
The details are in the deck plans. Shrink or expand the layout to suit your space. These railing details can be utilized by any carpenter to give this formal stately deck a grand look. Utilize the center panel at the pergola in regular sections if you like to mix things up a little.
The pergola design can be easily adapted smaller or larger. This deck supported pergola has lateral braces in the plans that resist movement. We don’t recommend stretching the spans, but if you want to go larger, add more posts. This pergola is designed to house a retractable canopy easily.
The large steps can be increased to deal with a higher deck or minimized down to a standard stair detail. If using composite or PVC decking, check the manufacturer’s recommendations for spacing of stringers. Decks of this scope should be overseen or handled by professional builders. If you are building on your own, make friends with a better local builder.
Making Large Decks that Last Longer
Large decks are an investment and certain things should be addressed when building. Giving it larger joists, joist flashings and spacing decking will allow the structural part to last longer. Stairs are often the first to degrade–so adding a few extra stringers means years of extra durability.

It is always better to have a professional designer craft deck designs. Most decks featured in magazines involve a designer, and the investment of a few hundred dollars can make a deck spectacular! Many people that design their own projects live to regret the decision. A designer can head off many tragic flaws and offer specialized detailing for things that could otherwise balloon budgets.
We can supply 2D or even 3D photorealistic designs so that you can see exactly what your deck will look like. Check out some of our designers in the 3D Design Gallery
